Steelhead Haven Landslide Remediation

Above: Crib wall following first flood after construction.

In August 2006, a 1300' log crib wall was constructed at the toe of the Steelhead Haven landslide. Slope runoff north of the wall, flows into settling ponds before exiting into the river. The crib wall has successful deterred the river from carving into the landslide sediment for two seasons. (updated December 16, 2008).

In December 2005, GeoEngineers conducted preliminary analyses on the feasibility and design of using wood structures to stabilize the Steelhead Haven Landslide in the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River. This consisted of several steps that build upon one another:

-Determine landslide potential and the subsequent volume of material displacement, using LIDAR data.

- Determine possible locations for a wood structure in the river and how that placement would affect the storage capacity and toe stabilization of the landslide material.

- Determine how the physical changes to the river would affect the surrounding community.

Additionally, the Stillaguamish Tribe conducted a biological assessment of the impact the project may have on wildlife in the area.

The project was successfully completed in summer 2006.
